How many J4s do have? Clearly there is a 44 in back ground. Another 40 or 45 to the right? She looks really great!  8)

What do you dislike about the 7.50 16 tyres??? It looks like Dunlop Universals. Ive just bought a set of Universals for my 40 because the 30 BFGs are too small and I really like the old school look.  |(

Gerhard ,Only got 3 x 40,s but still looking to add  ;D.
The one in the far backround is FJ 45 RV station wagon and the other my BJ 42 ,both
needing rebuilds .You correct those tyres dunlop universal,s but mine made in Zim so
maybe fit for a scotch cart only . as 1 cant balance they so out of round .I do agree they look the part ,but IMO those skinnies fine for serious terrain ,but impractical ,unreliable ,uncomfortable,
for our general use ,Old technology .My rims not splitties ,are the original so to get the bead on a crossply over its PT ,hoping to use my orig rims and hubcaps for the BF muds . :)

Hi rob

Do you know if that Greek guy called zorba is still around.
He rebuilt 2 cruisers for my uncle in kadoma back in the day.

Build looking great Btw.
We really struggle here in bots to get some of the basics (sandblasting, powder coating, engineering, lack of a decent trust worthy mech) we were saying the other day. We would be better off in Zim. At least we could pop into Bobby hawks workshop and get some stuff done.

 Dane .
Yes Zorba the Greek still around as far as i know .Think he makes bread now instead of
rebuilding Cruisers .Understand your predicament in Bots ,The best is buy a decent Manual and do the mechanical work yourself ,If you mark everything and do stage by stage ,and take photos if you not sure .It can be done and very rewarding .Big Advantage with these old cruisers they are very very simple .And always lots knowledgeable and helpful people here on the Forum to assist when all else fails .Zim also a mission to get any outside work done .All the Artisans seem to have left ,I end up doing nearly all my work here myself .
Your Build looking Great ,Just persevere and enjoy it , :)

Hi Dane
I used to live in Gabs for a number of years so I might be able to provide you with some contacts for mechanics and engineering work. I still have some friends there who would be able to provide you with some up to date information. There was a German mechanic who was very good who bought my friends Patrol when he left apparently he was very good. I shall try to find out his name. If I needed help with any mechanical work I used a guy called Aaron a ZA mechanic he was based in Broadhurst Industrial estate up near the printers. Not sure where to suggest for sandblasting I would contact the paint supplier also in Broadhurst Ind. If you are chasing a Toyota manual I can look for you over here in Aus.

Thanks andy. I will try and find Aaron tomorrow.

We have one guy who is very good with cruisers. He stripped and sprayed our engine.

However is is very busy in the week at work and only has weekends available. Not so easy to pin him down. Very Clued up guy though. We just so desperate for a good reliable family mech in Gabs at the moment.
Apologies for jacking your thread Rob!

Removed rear diff ,fitted new bearings the rest all good . reset preloads and backlash and fitted speedy sleeve and new seals on pinion and halfshafts .
Fitted new Dobinson rear sprongs ,drilled and fitted friction pads to spring blades .
Stripped front axle down ,fitted new swivel bearings and birfield seals .

Interesting No Birfied seals on this axle .and note old style side shafts .No oil was evident at all in Birfields on stripping so this set up does work .

Nothing like fresh new front hubs.

Diffs etc is one thing that we have not done on our 44. Mechanically though there did not seem to be any major problems before we stripped.
What is your reason behind opening your diffs I see most of the guys doing it. Was there an obvious problem with it? Or is it just a must do routine task?

I was thinking about our rear dif yesterday. LSD and all. What do u think would be our best solution. How would I go about testing if all is OK inside?
