Picked this up from Kempton Park today. The rust is really, really bad. Will need a genius to resurrect this - rechristening this Rusty from here on in.

Plan is still to fully restore the cab and modify this onto an 80 series carb frame.

I have a donor 80 which actually runs like a champ so that side is sorted, just need to see whether Rusty can be fixed

I am appealing for help if anyone has spare bits of metal (cabs, bonnets) from 45/47 bakkies which i can use as donor metal and any general thoughts

Engine runs strong but will be going to a farm bakkie I have

Assuming there is a way forward here i also thought it would be interesting to keep tabs on the costs of the build to see just how much this bankrupts me. So far I have:

Cost of Rusty:                  R25k
Cost of 80 series GX carb: R38k (fully on the road and running beautifully - also a bit rusty)
Cost of transport:             R4.5k

Happy to hear all thoughts and advice

Its been ages since i got this but the vehicle is now stripped and the rust is pretty terrifying.

In order for this to work i am going to need a complete donor cab from another 45 bakkie. If anyone knows where i might find one with only limited rust please let me know. I need pretty much everything except doors but would be happy with any bits and pieces

Are you still going to put the cab on an 80 chassis?

45's are getting really scarce, but often driving around through different car dealer areas might help to spot one. Unfortunately they all want top dollars, even for a very bad one.

Rudi - Plan is still to put it on the 80 series base. I have already recycled the troopy engine and other bits into a farm diesel which i am going to sell to my dad

Adolf - too true about top dollar. If it comes to that though i will have to cough up but i really need to find the under seat fuel tank so that i can get the diesel off to the farm (and raise some cash)

Thanks John. Do you intend to use the chassis once the swop is done?

Hi Rudi, I am using the 45 chassis, engine etc to build a farm bakkie. I'm looking for a cab and it may be the case that i have to buy a full vehicle to get one; in which case i will let you know

Thanks John! Will appreciate it. There's a guy in Memel collecting rough Cruisers and selling the spares/vehicles. Look on junkmail and you should find him. A relatively rust free cab you won't find easily, equally so front fenders. Good luck!

I have an itch to make a toy J4 Cruiser with a big engine, huge tyres and strong US diffs so I can actually play with one instead of keeping the ones I have clean.

Ironically, I have all the bits needed apart from a chassis. Contemplated making a full tube frame jobbie too so may end up doing so if I don't find a chassis.

Something like this (apart from the colour):
