When we stripped Egberts axles I found the rear axle seals were completely different to my 40

I then searched my manuals and toyodiy back to 1976 and couldnt find this type of seal anywhere

The axle seal actually sits inside the wheelbearing retainer nut - very strange, whereas on all other 40's this seal sits on the inside of the axle tube.

As I was concerned that the diff oil would migrate out into the wheelbearing grease through the threads of the wheelbearing retainer nut - I covered these threads with silicon gasket sealer to prevent this.

Found another pic on MUD

But the oil seal in the rear on mine is inside that nut. The whole assembly is NOT available from Toyota, but I got the actual oil seal (which just presses into the nut itself) from SOR.

And the new axle seals are in, but here's a picture of the 75-80 FF hub nuts--the ones with the integral seals.

I read through my manuals and the Haynes one has this type of seal in their diagrams, the others have the more common ones.

Definitely - the sealant is rated at 180 deg there is no way this will get anything above 80deg and there is no rotation or friction to worry about
