Okay, seeing as we have so few action pics of our 40’s due to all the resto projects on the go, I thought a couple of words about the LCCSA KZN gathering at Darkest Africa would be appropriate. But from Trokkie’s perspective.

Friday 23 October 2009 at 13h15 had me foot tapping impatiently while Wayne my newfound mechanic put the finishing touches to my gearbox rebuild which should have been ready the day before but for some bearing supply problems. Finally with a wipe of a rag we were off but too late to join the convoy which was leaving from Hammarsdale at 14h00.

There are no pics of the trip there as the camera had been packed in the 80 in a box which had a lot of stuff on top of it and we were too rushed to unpack.

Anyway we eventually arrived and Trokkie parked off next to Ben Marais’ 45 for the next 24 hours

That evening in the middle of a serious thunderstorm, Lynn and I took the 80 to Kusa Kusa where we were staying – an interesting road in the twilight after all the rain. One hour to do 26kms…

The Saturday was a real steamer so Trokkie stayed in camp while we did the Darkest Africa tour in air-conditioned luxury; a tame but pretty drive.

After the group photo (credit to Dave Moore)…

…we said our good byes and headed back to Kusa Kusa; a much easier drive than the day before as most of the water had dried out.

The road out of the Darkest Africa valley

Across the river which was flowing about 12” higher the previous evening (this is the road to Zingela if anyone knows where that is)

Through some puddles

And up the hill

Taking the lead in case the 80 needed a tow…

More rocks

The next day it was 25kms dirt road to Colenso and then home via the R74; Estcourt, Mooi River, Nottingham Road where we stopped for a beer, Lions River, Pietermaritzburg and Westville.

A stiff, tired but quite exhilarated Lynn outside Notties Pub; she drove Trokkie from Kusa Kusa to Westville.

Great trip!

Good to see trokkie being used and  :theo:  driving her. That new lift also looks great- love the tall and skinny look.

Show some pics with the baja tyres fitted ?

Thanks guys and welcome back Theo  :theo: - answer your skype.

Quite interesting about the tyres. 50% of the guys at Darkest Africa said the Bajas should go back on (they were there on Warwick Chapman's 60; I lent them to him for the weekend) and 50% said a 40 with the original takkies looked fantastic.

I like the skinny look for now (power and handling better too) but will put the 33's back on for the ToyRover Challenge. But will definitely repaint the rims 'splittie grey'.
